NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS
New tables from the 1990 census covering state and local
income measures are now available free to the media upon request.
The tables cover five levels of geography (states down to places)
and have information on per capita, median household, and median
family incomes. Media may request copies of specific tables from
the Public Information Office at 301-763-4040.
Individuals or organizations (not media) may purchase these
tables by calling 301-763-8576. Prices range from $10 to $78 per
table.
A brief description of each table's content is below.
STATES
CPH-L-122--Ranks states by median household,
median family, and per capita incomes. (1 page)
CPH-L-130--Shows state income distributions and
median incomes for families by size of family.

These data are available in printed or electronic formats.
Users of these data should be aware that two sets of
1989 income estimates for the nation and states are available
from the Census Bureau: these 1990 decennial census estimates
and estimates from the Census Bureau's 1990 March supplement to
the Current Population Survey (CPS), which were released in the
fall, 1991. Both data sources are derived from a sample of the
population and are subject to sampling variability and other
sources of error and should be used with caution.
The selection of one data source over the other depends on
your intended use. For example, decennial census income
estimates are recommended when you are ranking states or want
substate level figures. Income data from the CPS, however,
should be used when year-to-year comparisons are being made.
